Decelerations are transient episodes of a decrease or slowdown in the fetal heart rate by 15 bpm or more, lasting 15 seconds or more. They usually occur in response to uterine contractions or fetal movements. In principle, decelerations are not characteristic of a healthy fetus, but a small number of them, with other normal indicators on CTG, may be a variant of the norm.
